We both grew up in La Crosse WI, moved away and came back to be closer to our family. We did not meet at all when we were younger, despite having similar friends and attending many similar events. We met in our early 50's when we saw each other on Facebook, and we then decided the other was cute. Our friendship grew stronger, and we married each other in 2022.
We joined our "families" including 1 dog, 4 cats and 2 fish. Pam has a separate job of working from home and is Ron's #1 cheerleader and business refiner (the title she came up with that sounded more exciting than office manager). When we are not working from home, we love to go on motorcycle rides to our favorite destinations, go hiking in the woods and camping, but most of all, we enjoy time together and spending it at home with our "mini zoo".

Every tree holds a story. Our role is to ensure that the story continues with premier hardwood tables that are getting very hard to find this flat, this wide, but are still a joy to build from scratch. We have tables made from old ash trees that are almost non-existent today as a result of the emerald ash borer invasion in 2002.
We have made long and sturdy American Chestnut clocks with long-lasting quartz timing movements installed and are ready to hang on your wall. The hardwood used in our clocks comes from the ancestors of the distinct and smooth wood that are cloned species of the American Chestnut trees. Forty acres of original trees were planted in the 1870s near La Crosse, Wi, but all of the American Chestnut disappeared from the entire Eastern U.S. by the 1950's, never to return here in such numbers again.

Forests seem to have incredible resilience and regeneration capabilities, so the tables we make are practically brought from straight from the forest with no middleman, into your own special space. Hanson's Hardwood Designs is a small business, and we uphold a meaning for our language of love for forming a simple, but not simpler eye pleasingly, personally inspiring tables that always uses non-engineered, naturally produced hardwoods for our tables such as green ash, black cherry, hackberry, American elm, white oak and more. We use a variety of hardwoods in our tables to give it its uniqueness you won't get if the table is mass produced by manufacturers that will use composite and mostly synthetic and engineered wood to make their tables that you may be have to be assembled yourself. Buying cheaply made furniture and getting it fast is probably something you should avoid at any cost. Our hardwood tables greatly excel in shine, fit and finish.
Wood from trees is the single rarest material in the universe. There could be entire planets out there made of gold and diamonds, but as far as we know, Earth is the only planet in the universe that would have wood. Wood as we know it, only exists on Earth.
Wood comes from complex plant life itself, so by carefully and purposefully researching the tree species location and environment from which it lived and exploring a tree by its forest life's events and disturbances, or when it had field clearings by farmers.
There is less than 1% of our original virgin (frontier forests) still intact and remaining in Wisconsin and less than 4% of the existing original trees still standing in the U.S. that it once had at the turn of the century. Modern industrialized logging and clearing practices began in the 1800s. A majority of old-growth, unlogged forests are gone forever, never to return again. Large parts of southern Wisconsin are now characterized by rural housing developments resultant in an increasing threat to forests, particularly in the Driftless area which has experienced considerable growth.
Modern practices of various replanting methods were scant or non-existent at that time and almost all of the native timberland trees were cut down for a lumber source. The Native Americans in tribes that lived here long before us used to set regular intentional wildfires to manage their environments in order to promote desirable ecosystems that benefitted native plants and animals throughout the forested lands of theirs.
The population and distribution of tree species in Wisconsin's forests were pretty stable from about 2000 years ago up until the 1800's. Wisconsin's lumber era started in earnest in the 1850's with the harvesting of "Big Trees" first in 1892, that eventually took over 4 billion board feet of lumber from our forests. We have sustainable harvesting and recovery practices with a better understanding of ecological processes now in place. In the mid-20th century forest cover began to increase again with improved forest management practices.
By studying the ecology of the forest's disturbances, it will most likely lead to better land management practices when we can put native trees that should grow here, above all others. We hope to discover the real story and history behind our hardwood table's authentism. It's the special unique individuality that always counts when making natural edge tables. These tables are made to be individual, as if mother nature herself was being forthright in her judgement of natural beauty contained in the hardwood table's beauty.

Each of Hanson's handcrafted hardwood tables are constructed slowly and purposefully in order to show you their own individuality, making each table the only copy around exactly like it. Here, we like to make big tables and that's what speaks to us. Small tables we make are beautiful in their own way, but big is when a slab took over 100 years to grow, and there lies a different responsibility to follow there with both weight and gravity. There is a seriousness of importance of natural design. George Nakashima said, "The work is not about me, it's about the tree." Personally, I don't force any table design in any profound ways. The movement in the grain helps me incorporate listening to the story that's already in the wood. He also said, "Trees yearn to live again to serve man."
