About our business

Our Story

We both grew up in La Crosse WI, moved away and we both got married to others and lived in different cities apart for many years, not knowing each other yet. Back in the beginning of the 90's, we left our respective hometown of La Crosse separately to live our lives far away. She went to Menomonie and then to Eau Claire, Wi, and I moved to Miami, Fl., but both felt a real need to move back to La Crosse after 2015 to be closer to our parents, who still resided here. Both of us never saw, met, or even heard of each other at all prior to 2019 despite having similar friends and attending many similar events early on.

We both graduated from different schools in La Crosse separately, at Logan and Central High Schools. 'The Class of 1985.'  But our paths never crossed until that one summer day on July 30, 2019.  We happened to meet from Facebook scrolling that day at the very same time and had only one friend in common between the two of us. "We then decided the other was cute." It turned out that we had many things in common after all, like the love for family, good friends, and animals.  Our friendship grew stronger, and we married in 2022.

We joined our "families" including 1 dog, 3 cats and 2 fish and a lot of extra stuff.  Pam has a separate job of working from home and is Ron's #1 cheerleader and business refiner (the title she came up with that sounded more exciting than office manager). When we are not working from home, we love to go on motorcycle rides to our favorite destinations, go hiking or camping but most of all, after a hard day's work we enjoy time together and spending it at home caring for our "mini zoo".

The best type of living room tables are genuine hardwood tables

Driftless areas can preserve ancient landscapes and geological history, providing valuable insights into the region's past. The forests eventually cleared the way for the beautiful ash trees used by Hanson's Hardwood Designs LLC.  The tables come from the special sort of trees in the Driftless Area that are dying off due to the invasive emerald ash borer beetle.  This situation makes the wood particularly rare and valuable, especially since the trees used for the tables are often 100 years or older, adding to their historical significance and character.

The emerald ash borer beetle's impact on the ash trees in the region underscores the importance preserving and utilizing the beautiful hardwood tables they may turn into.

It is predicted more than 99% of all green, white and black ash trees will die from the infestation from the The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) that was first detected in 2008 and has been confirmed in all 72 counties in Wisconsin.

Ash mortality is already high in Southern Wisconsin, exceeding 90%. With not many left around today, these trees will eventually die off completely.

Our beautiful American Chestnut wood clocks with long-lasting quartz timing movements are already made ready to hang on your wall. How about an outdoor water-resistant porch welcome sign? On these, you can interchange any or all of the letters to form any words you want it to read. 7 extra letters are included.

Our clocks and some of our benches come from the trees that were descendants from the original chestnut trees planted in the 1860's. Our hardwood clocks originated from and are exact clones from trees of the original 40 acres once planted by the son of a retired Civil War general, located near La Crosse, Wi.

The largest of all the chestnut trees grew best in their native zones, like in USDA zones 4-9 near the Appalachian Mountains, loving their hot, humid summers. They grew very large, with some reaching over 100 feet tall with trunk diameters at their base from about 10 or more feet across.  They were a dominate species to about one-quarter or more of all trees in the Appalachian Mountains and eastern forests, from Maine down to Mississippi.  By the 1950's, those massive trees were gone forever.

All of the American Chestnut trees disappeared from the Eastern part of the U.S. and by the 1950's, about 4 billion or more of our Nation's trees died from chestnut blight, a fungal disease accidentally introduced to the United States from Asia in a shipment in the early 1900's.  Our own special small business feels lucky to craft our exquisite chestnut clocks and simple chestnut benches from this highly prized wood for woodworkers.

Your own special and loved traditional home or log cabin needs a proper matching hardwood table adornment to always make it feel special, and each piece does have our amazing smooth tricolored matrix of brilliant glass mica powder bits permanently embedded deep within its finished surface. Its easy-smooth polyurethane topcoats seem to light up with combined with sunlight glancing through the windows of your home. These tables gracefully blend seamlessly into your home decor. Bring the scenery in, as nature calculated it correctly.

These magnificent tables often tell their story of both the forest and the human hands that shaped them into the tables they are today. Forests seem to have incredible resilience and regeneration capabilities, so they are sustainably sourced. You can also choose your own specialty sets of steel or cast aluminum legs from a choice of different companies. We will carefully install your choice of legs for free, to outfit your table properly as you purchase it.

--------------------------------------------------

The Driftless Area supports the region's diverse woodlands and provides the raw, beautiful, and unique wood that is at the cornerstone of our local business of making traditional hardwood tables from ash, black cherry, hackberry, walnut American elm, or white oak you can choose from.

Buying cheaply made temporary furniture and getting it fast is probably something you should avoid at any cost. Our handcrafted hardwood tables greatly excel in fit, finish, and shine every time.

--------------------------------------------------

Did you know that wood from trees is the single rarest material in the universe?  There could be entire planets out there made of gold and diamonds, but as far as we know, Earth is the only planet in the universe that would have wood. Wood as we know it, only exists on Earth.

Wood comes from complex plant life itself, so by carefully and purposefully researching the type of tree species, location and environment from which it lived and exploring a tree in relation to other trees living nearby it, combined with all of its events and disturbances, or when the area had field clearings by farmers- is usually a good indicator of the quality of trees located there.

Wisconsin's forests have shifted dramatically to less diversity and more simple stands of Aspen, paper birch and Red Maple. In the late 1800s and early 1900's, the United States experienced a rapid deforestation driven by the industrial revolution and a national attitude that viewed forest clearing as a sign of progress. Old-growth forests in Wisconsin used to be mostly giant stands of Eastern Pine, Hemlock and Cedar, long ago.

There is less than 1% of our original virgin (frontier forests) still intact and remaining in Wisconsin and less than 4% of the existing original trees still standing in the U.S. that it once had growing at the turn of the century.  Modern industrialized logging and clearing practices began in the 1800s.  A majority of old-growth, unlogged forests are gone forever, never to return again. Large parts of southern Wisconsin are now characterized by real estate subdivisions that seem to be a never-ending and increasing threat to forests, particularly in the Driftless area which has experienced considerable growth in housing developments and shopping centers in the last 35 years.

Modern practices of various replanting methods were scant or non-existent at that time and almost all of the native timberland trees were cut down for a lumber source. The Native Americans in tribes that lived here long before us used to set regular intentional wildfires to manage their environments in order to promote desirable ecosystems that benefitted native plants and animals throughout the forested lands of their home reservation territories.

The population and distribution of old-growth tree species in Wisconsin's forests were pretty stable from about 2000 years ago all the way up until the 1800's. Wisconsin's lumber era started in earnest in the 1850's with the harvesting of "Big Trees" first in 1892, that eventually took over 4 billion board feet of lumber from our forests.  We have better sustainable harvesting and recovery practices with a clearer understanding of ecological processes, now in place.  In the mid-20th century forest cover began to increase again with improved forest ecology management practices.

--------------------------------------------------

At Hanson's, we don't always make big tables, but big is what speaks to us. Small tables are beautiful in their own way, but big is when a slab took over 100 years to grow, and there lies a different responsibility to follow there with both weight and gravity.

There is a seriousness of importance of natural design. George Nakashima said, "The work is not about me, it's about the tree."  Personally, I don't force any table design in any profound ways.  It's already there to make more beautiful.  The movement in the grain helps me incorporate listening to the story that's already in the wood.  Nakashima also said, "Trees yearn to live again to serve man."  I think about that line every time I start to build. Hanson's Hardwood Design wants to build a hardwood table worthy of the time that tree took to grow.
