-------------------------------------------------
You can thoroughly enjoy your new coffee table experience by purchasing one or more tables from Hanson's Hardwood Designs website, where you can discover a bit of the fascinating history behind each table the Driftless Area has to offer, from one of the four states that accompany it where ancient landscapes and unique geological formations have shaped the growth of hardwood trees. They are then selected to make our magnificent hardwood tables that everyone needs for their homes.
These are the hardwood trees that help us create these 100% natural live edge hardwood tables for you to enjoy daily in your home. Many times, we create our tables from trees that are over a century old, providing not only stunning background material for single slab tables, but they also tell the story of resilience against environmental challenges trees must face, living out their daily lives until old, standing alone in the seemingly inhospitable wilderness.
--------------------------------------------------
Driftless areas can preserve ancient landscapes, unspoiled countryside, and conserve its historical geological formations of ridges and swales providing valuable insights into the region's ecological past. The unique evolutionary and genetic histories developed characteristically older, locally more adaptive gene pools in some of our hardwood tree species and are tied to long-term persistence in parts of the Driftless Area. After thousands of years since the last ice age left, our Driftless Area forests eventually cleared the way for these beautifully detailed and fine grade wood tables. We make only single slab hardwood tables built for your living room area, individually created for you exclusively by Hanson's Hardwood Designs LLC, of La Crosse, Wi.
Did you know that all of our ash trees across the Driftless Area and beyond are rapidly disappearing and dying off due to the invasive emerald ash borer beetle? This situation makes the wood particularly rare and valuable, when in good condition, especially since the trees used for these elegant tabletops are often 100 years or older but are still in perfect form, adding to their historical significance, each having specific individual character that comes through in the table's expansive wood grain.
--------------------------------------------------
The uniqueness of our region's Driftless Area supports the area's diverse woodlands and provides the raw, beautiful, and unique hardwood that is at the cornerstone of our own special local business, and we don't hesitate to create the more traditional looking natural table. Our tables are typically made from Ash, Cherry, Hackberry, Walnut, American Elm, or White Oak. We also have an assortment of high-quality American Chestnut wall clocks.
Although there are many variations of species of hardwood trees that grow in the Driftless Area, only a few of the most valuable, flawless, and suitable furniture quality tree slabs are chosen to make our tables from. We search all around for the veteran or ancient trees that are in the 3rd, or final stage of their lives in order to create a more stable tabletop due to its quality of wood grain contained it.
Most of these large diameter trees that help to make our wide tabletops unique are less abundant now, but they still have peculiar ecological interactions with nature, tying them to the Driftless Area, which are distinctive when compared with other regions due to local topography, microclimates, and soil conditions that stem from the area's unglaciated history. Its landscape is characterized by beautiful steep hills, forested ridges, deeply carved valleys, and karst geology with spring-fed waterfalls and cold-water running trout streams.
--------------------------------------------------
The long process involved in searching for, sourcing, and harvesting the high-quality tree specimens used in our tabletops significantly impacts their cost for making them. Premium woods like ash and walnut can sometimes be classified as expensive furniture wood due to their rarity and exceptional pure qualities desired by woodworkers. Live edge tabletops that are crafted and sculpted from a single slab of hardwood normally require more specialized small equipment while employing one's specific delicate and advanced woodworking skills to bring the tabletop to a look of perfection to the eyes with an impeccable finish to match.

After accumulating over 40 years of valuable career painting and real estate building repair prowess during my career, I turned my attention to my longstanding vision of creating a natural slab tabletop that makes the perfect living room table. I knew that people could find these tables of ours very useful in their homes because they are unusual, functional, and are modern looking.
About 6 years ago, I realized that by carefully mixing and matching high quality tiny glass mica powder color schemes into the freshly finished topcoats of our tabletops, they begin to look like a unified piece and prove to be very aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. This is the perfect type of high-quality polished live edge hardwood table look we've been after and trying to find, or one that invokes a sense of a 3-D when looking at it.
Together, Pam and I discovered that people don't necessarily have easy information or access to seek out and make a clear choice to own some of the highest of quality genuine handcrafted live edge hardwood tables around. People value spending time in their homes more than ever these days to de-stress. They've been finding the need to improve, rearrange, and complete their special space near their T.V. differently from what was there before. Owning very good quality tables that can last forever has been and will continue to be important to our customers.
--------------------------------------------
It is a complete process from start to finish when making a world-class tabletop at Hanson's.
--------------------------------------------
The time needed and the labor-intensive process of finding these quality slabs of hardwood and cutting, drying it properly then finally working it into an heirloom piece contributes to the overall cost of these expensive tables and proves to be more difficult as time goes by because of the scarcity of large old trees needed to make them.
--------------------------------------------
The perfect live edge slab finishing process itself involves tons of time sanding and proper drying time between the many layers of polyurethane or wood oil topcoats put on them with careful application methods and years of careful and painstaking painting experience to achieve our flawless results. When compared to other types of expensive wooden furniture, live edge tables stand out for the distinctive features they represent and are able put you in a better mood by looking at them, even if you don't happen to be in one at all.
Often, these fascinating and creative hardwood tables can cost hundreds of dollars because they serve as a main centerpiece in living rooms, making them the primary focal point in it. They never miss the chance to impress the best of friends, family, and other guests. Our thick profile handcrafted live edge or straight edge slabs offer both functionality and artistic appeal, making them worth the initial investment and well worth it in the long run.
For when it comes to our incredible hardwood tables; they always greatly deliver and excel in quality, longevity, and giving uniqueness for your home.
All of our hardwood tables are an absolute witness to nature's slow renewability process. Most furniture grade hardwood species used specifically for our tabletops can take decades or centuries to mature, so our immediate supply of tables cannot be rapidly expanded. We keep less than 50 tabletops of your choosing in stock at any one time. These tables are forest to forever quality with usefulness that lasts. We won't make a table we wouldn't put in our own living room at home.

Ron and Pam were great to work with. They patiently helped us through each step- selecting the right tables, finding and mounting the legs we wanted. Everything was finished perfectly. We highly recommend Hanson Hardwoods!"
Steve and Pamela found our ash hardwood tables to be so beautiful and useful in their home, they purchased their 3rd large live edge ash table from Hanson's Hardwood Designs to replace their old bar top and make it more accommodating for entertaining a number of guests on their main level. On their first visit to our furniture store in La Crosse in the summer of 2023, they bought two of our ash hardwood tables and just loved all three of the ones they eventually purchased!
